Most commonly used in the construction of bridges and buildings to connect metal girders and beams, structural nuts are also known as heavy hex nuts and are a vital component when it comes to providing a high strength fastening to steel structures. Our team at GSS Fasteners have been offering a variety of structural nuts to our customers in the UK for many years now, and we have a huge selection to choose from to guarantee you find exactly what you require. All of the fasteners we supply are only made using industry standard materials from trusted manufacturers, so you know that choosing GSS Fasteners means choosing durable, strong, and exceptional quality.

What is a Structural Nut?

Heavier and thicker than standard hex nuts, structural nuts are larger and better used in assemblies that have a larger load capacity. They are typically applied alongside structural bolts and washers to metal beams and girders and the hexagon shape of them makes them very easy to clamp with pliers or a wrench. To install them, they must be on the opposite side of the materials being fastened with the bolt head or machine screw head on the opposite bearing surface to compress together for a secure fastening.

Which Heavy Hex Nut Do I Need?

When it comes to choosing the right equipment for a project, there are many benefits that structural nuts can offer, however, it’s important to make sure you’re choosing the right one. For heavy hex nuts, one size fits all does not apply and they come in a range of “grades” that offer different uses depending on your needs. These include:

Grade A: This grade is made from steel and are paired with low carbon heavy hex bolts, offering a core hardness of Rockwell b62-C32.

Grade C: Recommended to be paired with A-325 structural bolts, these structural nuts have a core hardness of Rockwell B78- C38.

A 194 Grade 2H: Heat treated to make them great for use in high temperature and pressure applications. These nuts have a core hardness of Rockwell C24-C38.

A 563 Grade DH: It’s recommended that these nuts are used exclusively with A-490 Type 1 structural bolts and they have a core hardness of Rockwell C24-C38.

A 563 Grade DH3: Similar to above, these nuts are also heat treated but recommended for use with A-490 Type 3 bolts. The core hardness of these nuts is Rockwell C24-C38.

How to size your structural nut:

While grading is important and each industry sector that uses heavy hex nuts has their own requirements, it’s also essential that you make sure you’re choosing the correct size nut for the application. It’s fairly straightforward to find out the size you need as it is done by the diameter of the threaded hole and the pitch of the threading. For example, a 3/4″-10 nut has a 3/4 inch hole diameter with 10 threads per inch in the internal threading. If you would like help sizing your nuts, GSS Fasteners can help! Get in touch now!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are structural nuts, and what are their main applications in construction?

Structural nuts are specialised fasteners designed for high-strength connections in construction projects. They find extensive use in structural applications such as bridges, buildings, steel frameworks, and heavy machinery, where reliable and durable connections are crucial.

Are structural nuts suitable for both permanent and temporary structural applications?

Yes, structural nuts are versatile and suitable for both permanent and temporary structural applications. They provide secure connections that can withstand heavy loads and vibrations, making them ideal for long-lasting structures as well as temporary assemblies during construction or repair work.

What materials are commonly used to manufacture structural nuts for demanding structural applications?

Structural nuts for rigorous structural applications are typically made from robust materials such as high-strength steel, stainless steel, or alloy steel. These materials offer excellent strength, durability, and corrosion resistance, ensuring the integrity and longevity of connections in demanding structural environments.
